Doin’ Too Much highlights the legacy of adornment and audacity for Black Detroiters, and in particular, Black femmes. This project speaks to beautification, audacity, and extravagance as vital components of our daily lives, while refuting classist and anti-Black critiques of Black beauty culture.

Learning to Bloom

How Do You Flash Your Lights?

Zora Neale Hurston once said that the will to adorn is an integral part of Black expression, that “there could never be enough of beauty, let alone too much”. Indeed, the sound of my survival is in the clicking of my acrylic nails, the swish of my box braids, the jangle of my earrings. I flash my lights by standing in the legacy of fellow Black femmes, by treating myself as worthy of extravagance and indulgence.
